Samsung Galaxy S5: How to Setup Mobile Hotspot or Tethering

By: Unknown | Saturday, July 19, 2014

One of the most useful features of the Samsung Galaxy S5 is mobile hotspot and tethering. You can share your phone's data connection with your other IP-capable devices without the need of extra networking equipment. Mobile hotspot basically turns your phone into a wireless access point while tethering allows it to share connection via the USB connection to one computer only.

If you have a laptop and/or tablet at home, mobile hotspot is more appropriate as your other devices can connect wirelessly. However, if you have a desktop computer that doesn't come with WLAN adapter, then you would want to use tethering instead. In other words, mobile hotspot is wireless and can accommodate up to 8 devices while tethering is wired and can only be for one device only.

How To Turn On and Configure the Hotspot

  1. From the Home screen, tap the Apps icon.
  2. Tap Settings and then touch More networks.
  3. Touch Mobile Hotspot.
  4. Now touch the slider to turn on Mobile Hotspot.
  5. To configure the hotspot, touch More options.
  6. Tap Configure to edit the hotspot settings. You may want to edit the Network SSID and make it a little more descriptive, choose the security type that works best for you, enter your own Password to prevent others from connecting to your network and turn on Hide my device to make your network invisible to others.
  7. If you want to configure the Broadcast channel and Maximum connection, tap Show advanced options.
  8. Tap Save to keep your own settings. The hotspot will then reset and run in the settings you specified.
  9. To connect to your hotspot, simply turn on the Wi-Fi on your other devices. If you made your network invisible, however, search for the network using the SSID.

Please note that only mobile data can be shared. If your phone is connected to a wireless access point, it will be disconnected before you can use your own hotspot.

How to Tether Galaxy S5

Turning the phone into a wireless modem is as easy as setting up the mobile hotspot. Here's how…

  1. From the Home screen, tap the Apps icon.
  2. Tap Settings and then touch More networks.
  3. Touch Tethering.
  4. Using the original USB cable, connect the phone to your computer.
  5. Now check the box next to Mobile Broadband Connection.
  6. You can now browse the web using your old computer provided there are no other issues regarding the driver of your device.

As far as  mobile hotspot and tethering are concerned, the procedures specified here are the power ways to do it.
